Your favorite game show host, John Michael Higgins (America Says), is BACK! He’s hosting the brand-new game show Split Second, premiering tonight at 7:30p ET, only on Game Show Network.

Based on a format from game show legend Monty Hall, Split Second asks three contestants to decide in a split second which of three general interest trivia questions they can answer. The first player to buzz in gets the first pick, and the last player is left to answer whatever is left, which is often the most difficult. The player with the fastest response time and the highest success rate answering questions over the first three rounds advance to the bonus game where their ability to answer a rapid-fire series of questions could win them $10,000.

Hal Grant has been directing television for more than 40 years, including many of your favorite Game Show Network programs. But he has no plans to slow down any time soon.

“Why would I retire? I love what I do,” the veteran director told the Game Show Insider recently. “I’m like a kid when I get up in the morning!”   

Grant got his start as a stage actor, before switching to TV directing in the late 1970s. He’s been at it ever since, recently helming hit game shows like America Says, Master Minds, and Tug of Words (which returns to Game Show Network this fall).  

“Not only does Hal have a ton of experience he has a great attitude,” showrunner Rane Laymance added. “If you’re making something fun like a game show, you should have fun making it, and that’s the vibe Hal brings.”

I had the honor of chatting with the Emmy-nominated director recently at his home in San Diego, California. The following are highlights of our conversation, edited and condensed for space and clarity.

GAME SHOW INSIDER: When does your work on a game show begin?

HAL GRANT: If it’s a new show, from the beginning. I meet with the producers and go over the game and how its played. Then I work closely with the set designer and lay out camera positions that work for everyone.

Is it unique for a director to be involved from the ground up?

It’s unique to GSN, yes. They really like having me involved early, because who knows better what the show’s going to look like than the director?

Game shows have a ton of moving parts: hosts, contestants, titles, scores, sound effects, etc.  Is all of this done live or edited later? 

I’m a live-show director. So, when I do a game show, I do it as if we were live. I hate hearing “we’ll fix it in post.”

You must have nerves of steel!

I’ve been doing it a long time. A lot of people wonder how I manage to do all that. I usually say, “With a lot of help.” I’m blessed with a very good crew.

What does a typical production day look?

I come in around 9 a.m. We make sure all the cameras are working and our lighting people check all the lights. At 10:30 we start shooting our first show. Then we have about 30 minutes between shows to regroup and bring in the next set of contestants.

How many shows do you shoot in a day?

Generally, we do five shows: three in the morning, then lunch, then two in the afternoon.   

So, you do a whole week of shows in one day!

All the shows are a little bit different, but a half hour episode usually only takes about 35 to 45 minutes to shoot. I can do them all day long, but it’s more challenging for the host because they have to be charming!

Where do you sit? And how do you communicate with the crew and the host?

Sometimes I have a control room on-stage. Sometimes I’m in a truck parked alongside the studio. I’m on headset with my crew and I talk to the host with an earpiece.

Game Show Network hosts come from a variety of backgrounds. Is there an acclimation process with a new host?

Sometimes. But I usually just say, “When you’re talking to America, look into the camera. When you’re talking to the contestants, just have a conversation. Ignore the cameras.” And they get it right away.

What type of performer makes the best host?

Actors or comedians. John Michael Higgins, the host of America Says, had never done a game show in his life. I said, “How are you going to approach this?” And he said, “I’m an actor, so I’m going to play the part of a game show host.” Brilliant. I love working with him.

What’s one thing viewers would be surprised to learn about game show directing?

There’s no script and no rehearsal. I don’t know what they’re going to say, who’s going to say it, or who they’re going to say it to. Directing game shows is like chess: you have to anticipate the next move.

Are people ever surprised that you’ve been doing this as long as you have and are still as passionate as you are?

No. The ones who know me well and have worked with me for years know I’m addicted to it.

What’s your favorite thing about directing game shows?

It’s the camaraderie. We all like each other, laugh together, socialize together. I’ve worked at all these different companies, but Game Show Network is more like a family.

If you could say something to the viewers, what would it be?

We’re here to make you forget your troubles. I think the most rewarding thing is to be able to entertain America in a good way, a happy way. I hope you enjoy watching these shows as much as I enjoy directing them.

The Stylist Behind the Scenes

For Joanne Lavin, style has been the name of her game since childhood. “My parents had a high-fashion clothing store for more than 40 years,” the Chicago native explained. “So, it really is in my DNA!”

Joanne got her start working in a well-known fashion store in her hometown of Chicago. Her rise through the ranks and subsequent travels throughout the US and Europe made her a well-known figure in the industry. In Paris, she found success in establishing a business that helped American travelers put together the perfect European wardrobe.

After her time in Europe, she made a new start in Los Angeles and dove headfirst into the world of television. Her Emmy-winning taste and experience have made her the perfect liaison between celebrities, designers, and brands.

After more than a decade working with Game Show Network, her expertise has made Michael Higgins one of the best-dressed celebrities on the network.

“He said to me once, ‘I get more compliments on my clothes than my performance!’” Lavin told Game Show Insider. “Michael is so talented, so that was a fabulous moment for me!”

Our Exclusive Interview with Joanne

I chatted with Joanne about the challenges of doing wardrobe for game shows, and how it’s more than just pulling a suit off a rack. The following are highlights of our conversation, elegantly tailored for space and clarity.

GAME SHOW INSIDER: What does a wardrobe stylist do on a game show?

JOANNE LAVIN: I create an image with the network of how they want the host to look. And then I dress the host for five-six shows per day. That’s usually more than 125 shows, produced within a month and a half!

Does a host bring their own personal style, or do you lead them? 

I lead them, usually. Hosts have to love what they look like, but I don’t think I’ve ever had a problem. Who doesn’t love dressing up, especially when you’re on TV? 

Do you ever have to convince a host of a particular look?

Not a lot, but it does happen. Everybody has an image of their own style, but I love giving them a new perspective. And I love working with real people. That’s what I love about game shows!

What’s it like to work with John Michael Higgins on America Says? 

He’s amazing. I’ve worked with him since the beginning of America Says. Michael is like the gentleman of game shows. He’s one of the best people to dress. 

How would you describe his style?

In his normal life, he just throws on a pair of Doc Martens or sneakers. But he loves getting dressed up, and you can see that. I get to have fun with Michael because he’s a suit man. I get him the most incredible suits. I work primarily with Brooks Brothers for him.

Do you ever have disagreements?

Very few. I know the kind of shoes he likes. I know that certain colors look great on him. He really loves everything I do.

So, hosts like John Michael Higgins and others have developed trust in you over the years?

Not only trust, you become their friend. I’ve dressed Michael for the Emmys. Being a wardrobe stylist is very specialized. You need to be the kind of person who likes to help somebody else look their best.

What does a typical production day look like for you?

I come in, grab the clothes for the first show, and put them in the host’s dressing room. If we shoot three shows in the morning, he’s putting on three different shirts, ties, and pocket squares. After lunch, he changes his suit and we do it again.  

Do you try to coordinate what the hosts and the contestants are wearing?

Yes. I set up what a host is going to wear on a daily basis and take a picture of every outfit in advance for the week. The contestants bring three outfits and the contestant stylist takes pictures to make sure we are coordinated. Game Show Network is very organized!

Do you think viewers are aware of the amount of time and thought that goes into wardrobe?

Absolutely not! There are so many moving parts: shopping, fittings, approvals, alterations. You have to make sure everybody’s happy. And if they don’t like it, you need to change it. 

How does Game Show Network differ from other TV networks you’ve worked with? 

They’re very thorough. Game Show Network is very passionate about what they do. And I think that’s why they’re so successful. 

If you could say something to the viewers, what would it be?

I love dressing people. And I especially love when the host loves what he’s wearing. To make him happy and make him feel good, that’s the whole thing for me.

Every Game Show Network fan knows that Master Minds features an all-star panel of top trivia experts. But have you ever wondered how they find contestants who can match wits with legends like Ken Jennings — and keep their cool on TV?

“The more comfortable you are as a contestant, the better you will do,” said Rane Laymance, Executive Producer and Showrunner at Game Show Network. “We hold the contestant’s hand the entire way because we want them to succeed.”

We visited with Rane at Game Show Network H.Q. in Santa Monica, California as the team preps for a new season of Master Minds — coming in January of 2023! Here’s what we learned about how everyday people get picked for the “game of trivia smarts and strategy.”

GAME SHOW INSIDER: As an executive producer and showrunner, do you get involved with casting? 

RANE LAYMANCE: The way I got into game shows was through casting! My first job was casting assistant, then I worked my way up to producing. So, I’ve seen every different avenue of casting.

What do you look for in potential contestants?

We look for people who are also able to be themselves. You don’t want to watch someone on TV who’s feeling fake-y or not real. You want to see genuine people. So have fun, but be yourself!

What kind of a person makes a good Master Minds contestant?

Someone who knows their trivia, watches the show every night, shouts the answers out, and gets them right all the time. It’s all about finding those smart people who can pass the test.

What’s the test?

Master Minds has the longest and the hardest on-line quiz for potential contestants. It’s timed, so you not only need to know things, but you need to be able to answer quickly. If you can pass that test, you’ll probably get a call to come be on the show.

Do you ever do outreach to find contestants?

We have recruiters who go to trivia events around Southern California. We also reach out to trivia tournaments and hosts all around the U.S. who are willing to do email blasts to help us find contestants.

How about the Master Minds themselves? Do they ever suggest people?

The trivia world is very small, and everyone knows each other. The Master Minds are involved in a lot of these groups, so they help in getting the word out. That’s a great avenue for finding people.

Do you have to live in the Los Angeles area to be a contestant?

The show is taped in Los Angeles, but you do not need to be local to L.A. to participate! You do need to be able to get yourself to Los Angeles.  

How important is it to foster a diverse contestant base?

It’s really important because it allows all types of viewers watching at home to say, “Oh, I could be on Master Minds, too!” It also allows the questions we’re using to expand over different topics and be more inclusive.

What happens after you cast someone? Do you just plunk them down in front of the TV cameras?

Getting cast is only the first step. Once you make it on the show, your contestant producer becomes your new best friend. They do practice games with you, go over every rule, and tell you how it works on the stage.

What about during filming?

They’re with you the whole time. Every commercial break, they tell you how you’re doing and give you tips. They’re there to make it fun for you and make you feel comfortable so you can win.

Is Master Minds the only Game Show Network program with a returning champion?

Yes! I think that’s a fun aspect of the show. It’s exciting to cast a contestant, watch them win, and see them come back and try again! Viewers get to know them as they go along, root for them, and connect with them more.

What would you say to someone who’s good at trivia but reluctant to go on TV?

Everyone is capable of doing this if they allow themselves! It’s just a fun, great experience. Whether they win or lose, they’re going to have memories that last a lifetime!

With his outgoing personality and witty charm, actor and host Tony Moore is perfectly suited to “warm up” the studio audiences for Game Show Network programs. But he also has other credentials that makes him uniquely qualified for the job.  

“I’ve been a contestant on nine game shows!” Tony told the Game Show Insider recently. “So, I know when the energy is needed from the audience.”  

As a kid, Moore got his start putting on backyard shows for family members. Today, he performs in front of game show audiences, but don’t call him a warm-up comic.

“I’m not a comedian,” he added. “I’m just funny on accident.”  

I chatted with Tony on a break from the busy taping schedule of America Says, Master Minds, and People Puzzler. Here are some highlights of our conversation. Please add your own laughter and applause!

GAME SHOW INSIDER: What role does the warm-up person play in a game show taping?

TONY MOORE: We’re the Red Bull. We’re in charge of keeping the audience energetic and excited for each of the shows we film throughout the day.

What does a typical day look like?

The audience arrives 30 minutes before filming. I give them a rundown of the day, and then the first show starts. Then there’s a break while they bring in contestants for the next show. Then we have lunch, do the rest of the shows, and go home.

How many shows do you do in a day?

Five to six shows per day, all with that same audience.

Wow! So, it’s important to build up a rapport with them.

Exactly. I try to be an audience member along with them, clapping as hard as they are and paying attention just like they have to. We’re all in this dance party together.  

There’s a cliché of the hacky warm-up comedian. How do you put your own spin on that?

By not doing a stand-up routine for them. I have great conversations with our audience, finding out what they do and what they’re interested in, like a friend. I prefer those personal moments, rather than testing out “material” on them.

Why is the audience important to a game show?

If we’re having a great time, that energy is transferred to the contestants, the host, even the crew. The contestants really need to feel the audience’s energy in order to relax and be their best selves.

Are there do’s and don’ts for the audience?

Don’t yell out the answers because you’re not at home! Do shout out when there’s audience participation, like how much a contestant should wager on People Puzzler. I also remind them how to clap. 

People don’t know how to clap?

There are different types of claps! We like big, huge, energetic claps at the top of the show, medium-sized claps to keep the show going, but never any golf claps. Golf claps mean you’re not paying attention or participating.

How do you get them refocused if attention or energy is flagging?

I get them movin’ and groovin’! I put on some music and we do the two-step. Even if you can’t dance, everyone can do a two-step!

How important is a show’s host in creating the vibe in the studio?

The host sets the tone for the show and that starts in the studio. John Michael Higgins on America Says is open to doing all kinds of bits. Brooke Burns and the Master Minds have their playful banter. And Leah Remini on People Puzzler brings so much light and fun into the room.  

Are audience members ever like, “Please, please, please introduce me to Leah”?

No, the audience is very respectful! They can’t get pictures or autographs, but the hosts do come over and say hi and thank them. That acknowledgment makes the audience feel great.

You’re a host, yourself. Do you aspire to host a game show?

I do! “Fromcontestant to warm-up, and now he’s hosting his own game show!” Wouldn’t that be amazing?

I love how this interview has turned into a pitch! How does Game Show Network differ from other places you’ve worked?

This may sound corny, but it really is like a family there. We’re all there to work together and produce something that’s fun and that the audience will enjoy.

If you could say something directly to the viewers, what would it be?

Since its debut in 2019, the show that asks “practical, everyday questions” — and shares a useful fact with the answer — has become a fun and informative treat for viewers!

For the Insider scoop on how to win at Common Knowledge, I spoke with an uncommonly knowledgeable trio of Game Show Network staffers: Vice-President of Development Sean Olsen; Executive Director of Current Programming Michelle Cygan; and Executive Producer and Showrunner Rane Laymance

Here’s what I learned about the show hosted by “the man with all the knowledge,” Joey Fatone!

GAME SHOW INSIDER: What are the questions about on Common Knowledge?

SEAN OLSEN: The questions are about everyday stuff we talked about at the dinner table, knowledge we should all have in our back pocket. It’s that homespun, D.I.Y, “Grandma Knows Best” knowledge. Like, “What’s the best way to get a broken lightbulb out?”

How can a contestant prep for the show?

You really just need life experience. That’s the magic of Common Knowledge.

What’s a common mistake players make?

Trying to guess what your teammates are thinking. People can get hung up on that. You have to stick to what you think is the right answer and try not to over-game the game.

Fill in the blank: Joey Fatone is a great host because…

He keeps it fun and light. He’s so likeable, the guy you want to grab a beer with. He’s Joey!

What are the differences between the rounds?

MICHELLE CYGAN: All three rounds havefour different categories of questions, but Rounds One and Two are multiple choice and Round Three is write-in.

What should the other team be doing while their opponents are answering in Round Three?

When a question is asked to Team A, Team B should also be writing down their answer. If Team A gets it incorrect, then Joey goes to Team B and asks what they wrote.  

In the Bonus Round, can the team pick who plays first? And should you start with your strongest player or save them for last?

Yes, the team picks the order they would like their teammates to play. I think the best strategy is to save your strongest player for last to serve as the “ringer.”

How and when should I use the “pass” in the Bonus Round?

An often-debated question! If it were me, I would wait for the last person to use that pass. They’re your last hope. If you waste that pass in the very beginning, you might need it later.

What is the best strategy for picking a category?

RANE LAYMANCE: I like to play defense. If I’m playing against a team of athletes, and the category of “Sports” is up there, I’m choosing it. My team is going to have three possible answer choices to choose from, so we’ll have a chance at getting it right. And, more importantly, I’m not helping our opponents.

Teams get a bonus if their answers are the same. Is there a way to try to foster alignment?

No. And if you do, you’ll be disqualified!

So, you should pick teammates you’re aligned with in life?

I don’t think you need to be on the same page about how you live your life, or how you think, you just need to be on the same page about how smart you are. You’re going to be aligned if you get the correct answer, so don’t choose dumb teammates!

What’s one tip you can share with The Insider?

Someone who has experienced the world has an advantage! Often, younger contestants don’t do as well on Common Knowledge because they don’t have as much real-world experience, thereby not having as much “common knowledge.”
